he celebrated his birthday by drinking. While drunk, he thought, "there are many good things in this world, and it's easy to lose sight of this fact."

On Thursday, January 06, 2005
he purchased silverware at the Family Dollar. As damp snow fell, he shoveled the driveway and sidewalks at his house on Winter Street, painfully aware of the boderline pretension.

He also purchased a dwarf palm houseplant for the house on Winter Street. He named it Phil.


On Wednesday, January 05, 2005
he overheard a conversation between Cynic and Romantic. Romantic said, "Love transcends miles, time, enduring all." Cynic said, "We have only ourselves, and to pretend otherwise is to court misery."

he thought, knowing another person is a bit like believing in God. Because no matter how well you understand another person, no matter how well you feel you can predict them, they are still another person, different from you. And their otherness is a mystery, fearful and awesome. Mystery, whether God or another person, can only be penetrated by a leap of faith.

he drove to Massachusettes with Joe. They listened to the Da Vinchi Code on audio CD.

while leaving Luther's Blues after the Kissers New Year's show, he overheard a woman on a cell phone. "He's got that bitch with him . . . inside . . . I don't know, but I will beat that bitch down!"
